IJF Rule Update

It seems the rule I mentioned in the last post has been passed and will affect many of our Judokas. All leg grabbing techniques cannot be used as a direct attack henceforth, and will only be allowed as a counter attack.

New Updates from IJF

New rules introduced in August this year will drastically change the Judo scene will be tested in the Junior Championships in Athens.

According to the release by IJF, techniques below the belt line are no longer permissible. Any athlete trying to grip the opponent's leg will be punished with a 'shido' the first time. Another try will be awarded a 'hansokumake' and the victory will be awarded to the opponent. Only techniques using leg against leg will be allowed, or if the hand grip in the leg is the continuation of another technique tried, eg. 'Ouchigari' which can develop into 'Kataguruma'.

We don't want our sport to be mixed with other martial arts; Judo is judo, and all IJF wants to come back to the true judo, said Juan Carlos Barcos, Head of the Refereeing Commission. Barcos also made mention that IJF is concerned over the influx of techniques from wrestling and sambo, labeling it as not good for the future of judo in the Olympics.

Asia Junior Sports Exchange (Judo)

On the 24th of August, Lim Shimri from our dojo was sent to Tokyo to participate in the Asia Junior Sports Exchange together with several other judokas from all over Malaysia.

He took part in the singles -66kg and team event on the 29th and 30th respectively.

On the whole, the Malaysian team did not do well at all during this competition after being bulldozed out by countries such as Taipei and Khazakstan even before the semi-finals.

Perhaps, with proper inter-dojo training and sufficient aid from the Government, we will one day improve the national level of Judo in Malaysia.
